In July 1814, ‘The Royal Pump Room and Baths’ was built, the spa treatments that they provided were said to cure or relieve many disorders, such as stiff joints and also ‘the effects of gout and rheumatism and various paralytic conditions’. As a result of the spa resort, Leamington began to attract many wealthy and famous people, who all wanted to experience the magical qualities of the water. Following the death of Queen Victoria, a statue of the monarch who had once favoured the town was erected outside Leamington’s town hall in 1902. But almost 40 years later, it was offset by several inches on its plinth when a German bomb exploded nearby on November 14th 1940. It was never returned to its original position, and a plaque on the statue’s pedestal now commemorates the event.

Leamington may be the only town in Britain with an elephant wash. The first elephant trainer in England was Sam Lockhart, a member of the famous Lockhart circus family. For much of his life, he was based in Leamington, and when he acquired three elephants from Ceylon he kept them with him in the town as well as touring them around the country. According to local legend, the circus animals were regularly walked down from their quarters to bathe in the River Leam, but after their trumpeting disturbed worshippers at the nearby parish church, a dedicated elephant wash was built further away for them to use. Contemporary evidence of this is hard to come by, suggesting it may be just a myth – but the ramp that forms the alleged elephant wash is still visible from the Mill Road Footbridge opposite the Jephson Gardens park. This probably explains the monument in Regent Court food quarter 'The Three Graces' which has 3 elephant statues and Jepshons Gardens has elephants around benches.

The area has some excellent schools, most notably Arnold Lodge and Kingsley School for Girls in Leamington Spa, Warwick Boys School, and Kings High School for Girls. Leamington Spa (trains to London Marylebone from 70 mins and Birmingham from 31 mins), Warwick 2.5 miles, Warwick Parkway Station 2.5 miles (trains to London Marylebone from 69 mins), M40 (J13 & J15) 4 miles, Stratford upon Avon 11 miles, Coventry 8.4 miles (trains to London Euston from 61 mins), Birmingham International Airport 17 miles, Birmingham City Centre 18 miles (distances and times approximate).
