Full description

Apartment 28 is a two bedroom Penthouse Apartment with cityscape and sea outlook with a Juliet balcony.

Visit: www.grandplymouth.co.ukThe Grand is one of Plymouth’s most iconic buildings, which is steeped in history and located in one of the city’s most desirable locations.

Previously a striking hotel, this Grade II listed building is now being sympathetically refurbished to provide a range of spacious two and three bedroom apartments. Many of these apartments boast breathtaking sea views over Plymouth Hoe and the Sound, while others gaze over Plymouth’s varied cityscape. Original features have been restored wherever possible, whilst patterns were taken from the banisters, dado and picture rails, cornices, architraves and mouldings to provide sympathetic replacements.

Located at the western end of the elegant Regency terraces on Plymouth’s world famous Hoe and commanding a prominent position, The Grand is a Grade II listed building overlooking Plymouth Sound, one of the world’s great natural harbours.

Smeaton’s Tower, the iconic and historical red and white lighthouse, stands proud and tall just metres away, instantly recognisable and overlooking the cobbled streets of the Barbican and its waterfront.

Fast becoming one of Europe’s top waterfront cities, Plymouth is enriched by its extensive maritime heritage and lively cultural scene. A plethora of shops, bars and restaurants are on offer, creating a vibrant cosmopolitan feel.

The city boasts the region’s largest shopping mall, Drake’s Circus, and the established Theatre Royal offers some of the country’s leading productions. Also boasting the UK’s largest aquarium, housing exotic fish, turtles and even sharks, there is certainly no shortage of things to see and do.

For those wanting to explore outside of the city, Plymouth’s idyllic location on the border between Devon and Cornwall, means sandy beaches and rolling hills are all well within reach. And with more than 350km of coastline and over 400 beaches just crying out to be explored, it is no wonder that these two counties are the most popular in the UK.

The Grand

Designed by George Wightwick, a pupil of John Foulston (1772 to 1842), and built by John Pethick in 1879, The Grand forms part of Plymouth’s grandiose parade of Italianate buildings on the city’s world famous Hoe.

The Grand has always sought to inspire the people of Plymouth, mixing an air of elegance and splendour with some of the most staggering views of Plymouth Sound. Indeed upon opening, the hotel’s proudest boast was that it was the city’s only hotel with a sea view with one advertisement proclaiming that the hotel occupied ‘the finest position in Europe’.

Having housed the great and the good throughout Plymouth’s recent history (including three time Prime Minister William Gladstone, who spoke to an expectant crowd of ten thousand onlookers from the building’s balcony), and withstood the ravages of time, tide and enemy, a fire in 2005 caused such damage as to render the building’s future in severe doubt.

Lawrence Butler, Managing Director of Devington Homes, who has restored this magnificent building to its former glory said:

“I took on the exciting challenge in 2007 to save this iconic piece of history one of our most demanding projects to date and we gathered together the best professional team and contractor. Together we have saved this important building with the creation of stunning period apartments with arguably the best views in Europe and ensuring the legacy for future generations”.
