... Read more>Newland Avenue has changed dramatically over recent years. Historically a hotspot for small businesses and boutiques, the attractive thoroughfare is now also home to a vibrant dining and nightlife scene. Whether it’s cocktails at Level or a meal at Sleepers, craft beers at Larkin’s or a dog-friendly pub quiz at The People’s Republic, the welcoming area is full of life.
With numerous streets branching off in both directions, Newland Avenue is home to a rich and diverse population. The area is popular with students, families, young professionals, retired couples and people heavily involved in the arts. This is due to its strong offering of both retail and culture, whilst combining peaceful streets with an energetic community.
Whilst Ella Street is home to various art installations, nearby Princes Avenue is another great destination for shoppers and diners. It’s here that you’ll also find the beautiful green space that is Pearson Park, perfect for afternoon strolls, picnics and enjoying an ice cream whilst feeding the ducks. The well-kept recreational area contains a Victorian conservatory and the Pearson Park Wildlife Garden, operated by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. On top of this, the park was once home to Philip Larkin, the celebrated poet who worked as librarian at the University of Hull.
The Newland Avenue area presents regular events too such as the Larkin’s Ale and Music Festival, which turns bank holidays into a showcase of local talent and brewing. Meanwhile, the annual Assemble Fest is a festival of theatre and entertainment, with shows popping up everywhere from shops to hairdressers. Then there’s the Ella Street Festival and Princes Avenue’s Vista Festival, each bringing stalls, crafts, family fun and live music to the streets.
Served by regular Stagecoach and EYMS buses, passengers can travel directly to the city centre and back, as well as to Cottingham, Beverley and other key destinations. Free parking is available throughout the streets, plus the area is within walking distance of the city centre, the University of Hull, the annual Hull Fair and many other hotspots.
