History

This residential property was formally a hotel for around 80 years and was owned in the 1920s to early 1960s by an American lady (Carolyn Cobb) and her associate (Norman Webb). Mrs Cobb was very well known in literary circles and a number of well-known artistic types came to stay. Alec Waugh was a regular visitor and introduced his younger brother Evelyn Waugh to the hotel, which then became a regular haunt for him to write. He completed Black Mischief here in April 1932, A Handful of Ashes in 1934 and indeed checked in on 31st January 1944 to start work on his best-known novel Brideshead Revisited which he completed in June of that year. Other notables include Patrick Leigh Fermor, who wrote The Traveller's Tree here, the novelists CP Snow and John Steinbeck, and the poet John Betjeman.

The property is situated about 1 mile to the east of Chagford, not far from Castle Drogo, and in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park.
